Cobalt 276 Transom Speakers (No treble on one)

This is my fourth summer with my Cobalt 276. I have had an issue with one of the transom speakers since I purchased. The starboard side sounds fine and works as it should. On the port side speaker, only the woofer works. I figured it was a bad speaker since they sit outside all day and get wet...maybe it was just broken.

So, I replaced the speakers last year with the identical but updated speaker. The problem was the same, no treble only bass. All the speakers are Kicker 6.5 Coaxial. The AMP is a Kicker MX700.5 which can power 4 speakers plus a subwoofer. I think in my boat they run 2 speakers off each speaker connection since I have 8 speakers on board.

So, why would only one speaker not produce tremble? There are 2 speakers connected on the some connection and all the other speakers have treble. I should mention there is a cockpit switch to turn on the transom speakers....maybe a connection is bad there???

Any ideas?

Sorry I couldn't help myself! I will show this Mr. Nauti, he's handy with the stereo stuff....I'll get him to chime in!

I just had a similar issue. 1 speaker was full sound and the other was just partial. Replaced both speakers and still the same issue. After more trouble shooting the amp, head unit, rca cables to each channel, we ended up just running new cable to both transom speakers and viola! :D

Mr Nauti here -

Couple things, do you have a sub hooked up and is it working as expected? You very well could have the speaker hooked up to the sub output on the amp - I did it once by accident on our 222 same thing all bass no treble from the 6.5in speaker.

Another possibility - do you have any of the high pass filters set for the channel the bad speaker is on? They can be set to block high frequency sound again would result in no treble, but would most likely affect two speakers not just one.

I knew that song was in there somewhere. :-)

I guess my next step is to run new cable, thanks for the quick reply.

Mr Nauti, thanks for the reply. That might be it...maybe they mis-wired and I have 2 speakers connected to the sub output. I will give it a look.

Before you run a new cable through the boat try pulling the speaker out and just run a short cable directly from the amp to the speaker. I still bet you have an amp problem, two bad tweeters in a speaker would be really weird and cable is kinda a good or bad thing, if it carries low frequency sound ok it should also be ok /w highs.

+1
Rule out amp miss wired/ problem before running new cable.

I did a quick check of the amp connections and that speaker is not connected to the sub output. So, I will trace the cables and see if I notice anything out of the ordinary.

Still really doubt its a speaker wire issue, either amp settings or maybe RCA output from the head unit to the amp.

If you hook up another "good" speaker to the bad channel on the amp does the problem follow?

Conversely if you hook up the "bad" speaker to a known good channel on the amp does the problem follow?

Does you Head Unit have a Sub woofer pre-amp output? If so is that plugged into the appropriate input on the Amp? - that one bit me once too.

Start /w these and lets see where this goes.

Get a short length of speaker wire and plug the speaker directly into the amp. That will rule out/ confirm speaker and wiring.

Jeff do you mean it could be the speaker or the wiring?

I mean anything is possible but I have never seen a speaker wire deliver low frequencies but not highs. I have seen and have actually caught myself miss-wiring an amp or messing /w a crossover. Speaker wire is like the easiest part of the entire thing. Even if you wire positive to negative it will still work the speakers will just be out of phase.

Ask Mrs Nauti - spent about 20 minutes in the boat on the first day of ownership figuring out why the bow speakers wouldnt work, wanst speaker wire but it was some really messed up amp wiring. Dude who owned our boat before us apparently was messing w/ stuff w/ very little idea of what he was actually doing.

Orrrrr are you just messing /w me?
