Cruising Speed

We took a long trip across the lake yesterday and I did most of it cruising at around 3200 RPM. That had me at about 35mph. Does that seem about right? Just not sure if I should typically be going slower or faster for long trips. This may all be to vague to really answer but I thought I would ask. I have the speed gene and going faster is always tempting, but I know it will wear on the motor and the gas bill faster.

You're right on track Pro. Your speed and RPMs will be close, give or take one or two ticks either way at 30 or 40 mph. Most of us get the best fuel economy at 3,000 or 3,300 RPMs. Of course it's more fun to run WOT and hear her roar, but you don't want to do it for long and it sucks fuel like a big dog. But it sure is fun!
I have the same need for speed but usually only when I'm in the boat alone, which isn t very often. I foresee some early morning coffee runs this summer!

Cruising speed is called cruising for a reason. If you don't want to cruise and say you NEED to get somewhere fast then you better hurry and hammer down! Lol it's only gas, they will sell you more!

We can get pretty much anywhere on the lake in 45 minutes running at 35ish and the boat likes that speed so I guess that works pretty good for cruising. If I want to run across the lake quickly and don't mind burning the gas is it better to do it at say 90% throttle or does it really not matter and just hammer down? I see this coming into play when we really get into the season as our party cove is at the other end of the lake and I won't be wanting to leave early.

Boat engines have hard lives, unlike a car engine they are always under load pushing a heavy boat through the water. Running at WOT puts more strain on the engine, how much and how it will affect engine longevity is really a guess. Would Katie run across the lake for 30min at WOT, yes. Would I keep an eye on the temp gauge, the oil pressure, "lose" my wallet for the next marina fuel stop, and pray for the engine the entire way, also a yes.
It's a boat, its built for fun. Run it like you stole it, keep it well maintained and you will most likely sell it before you notice any internal engine issues from wide open runs.

Was out running the lake by myself on Friday. Cruising around at 35-40 mph. Opened her up, doing about 55-57 mph that's a whole different experience. For me it is nice to have the power and speed, but I worry some that something will go wrong and I can watch the gas gauge dropping. I prefer the 35-40 mph much better, but I'm glad I've got the extra speed if I need it.
