Super disappointing “reveal”. I ordered a loaded R7 the day before the reveal was announced by Cobalt. Told my sales guy to hold off from placing order until I could learn more. Now I have more queuing than answers. Any advice on which direction to go?

Any specifics of what you did or did not like on the R6 reveal?

Folks have been pleased with their R7. How do you intend to use your boat?

Thanks! I was expecting more detail with the reveal. A full walk through and explanation of the new features. We use the boat for a balance of cruising, anchoring and swimming off the platform, and water sports - waterskiing and tubing. No wake sports. Family of four, but frequent guests so up to 10 on the boat normally. Any more would be unusual.

Just re-watched the reveal. More detail than I remember. Too much wine last night, apparently! Looking forward to all the features being available on the website’s design your dream page so we can see all the options.

The R7 is a bigger boat and will be replaced by the R8 by this time next year. My advice? Unless you need a boat right now, check out the R6 before you order an R7. Once you see features, layout, interior quality level, etc, you’ll know which boat best meets your needs. In addition, we don’t have costing yet or the performance details. Both of those are pretty big purchase drivers.

How about the weight in specs R6 weighs almost 1000 pounds more than R5 and 200 lbs more than R7. Hmm must be a typo.

Its 5600 lbs with a 18 degree deadrise. That's as heavy as the current R7. Interior does seem nice. Seems they are gearing this way more towards tow sports and surfing. Added weight will help in the chop with the 18 degree deadrise......at the sacrifice of hole shot and top speed

But damn if you dont want a surf model that 18 degree deadrise has gotta be disappointing.

So it takes about 4 months from order to delivery. So you are looking at nov right now. I might be tempted to wait as they will run the current line through the 21 season.

I use my r7 for the same type of boating as you and it more than fits our needs. I knew the model change was coming when I was shopping last season (I had a 262 before) but it didn’t stop me from getting the 7. Only way I would dump mine would be if I went up to a 2 motor boat. Which would simply be for the performance gain.

And I have to say that the design on this hull, while clearly somewhat inspired by the A25, is very non-harmonious. Like it was designed by 3 different people who didn't talk to each other.


I don't hate the interior as much as I thought I would from the early shots. The cowl over the helm is truly awful, though - WTF were they thinking?

And how do you add 1000 lbs (20%!!) to a 25' hull? Lead stringers?

I really like the profile now and the tower / bimini has less parts and is more attractive. Together it looks way better. As mentioned helm is ugly and weight is a big issue unless this is meant purely as a surf boat. I assume the change from 21 to 18 deadrise it to make better waves. It will be interesting to see how this compares to a real surf boat for waves. Any ideas? How about for cruising?

Well, my old boat had 19 degrees of dead rise. The change going to 21 was amazing. I can’t imagine going from 21 to 18. Sure the weight might help but this seems like they tried to make an upscale tow boat. I’m not the buyer for that. Plus with an extra 1000lbs it’s going to limit the towability. Sure seems like the claim that Malibu was not going to influence production may not be holding true

Who knows it might be a great boat in the water.

Edit—-I just watched the reveal video. That was pretty sad. They are touting gaskets on the storage locker lid as a great feature—made me laugh actually. The self bailing feature is a good thing but an electronic helm seat? I can honestly say nothing else in the video even piqued my interest. So far it’s a swing and a miss for me.

Why reveal the R6 then not have the "Build Your Dream" page operational on the website so we can see all the options? I'm very curious about the canopy options, particularly the bow and stern extensions. Wish that was available on the R7.

Let’s wait and see how the boat handles rough water. There is a lot more to it than the deadrise at the transom. After 50 years of building boats, I have faith that they know a thing or two about hull design.

The brochure that you can download on the Cobalt site has a frost/slate interior pic that does not turn me off the same way that the prototype colors do. Maybe it will grow on me. In any event, I'm not rushing to trade in my R5 and wish they had some of the features that Formula is building into their boats.
