I am in the same situation. Just bought a Lakehouse and trying to figure out what boat to buy. I like the R5 surf but I am curious to see the R6. Does anyone know if they were at The Miami boat show?

Helloooo Sx2. Welcome to the Cobaltchat forum. So glad you found us!

A Cobalt boat will complement your lake house nicely. We have a few lake house owners on the site who will chime in with their experiences. Search MnLakebum on the site for his set up for some ideas.

If you go surf model remember the outdrive props will actually have a downward moment when you trim “up”. This can be detrimental if you are dealing with shallow areas. If your lake is deep throughout then a surf boat can be an ideal machine—especially for low impact wake surfing that is all the rage right now.

Any pics of your lake home?

Again welcome aboard mate!

It’s on Lake Travis outside of Austin. We’re finalizing the design now and will break ground in about a month. House won’t be finished until the fall. But the slip is ready and I have access to another house until mine is ready!

Not much news regarding the R6. I was told (last March) that it would be the first of the new R series boats to be introduced - scheduled for spring. Cobalt will be at our local boat show in 2 weeks. I'll ask the rep for you as I'm kind of curious myself.

I talked to my dealer last weekend at the boat show and they said a new R series prototype was shown at the annual dealers meeting in October. They said it is a prototype and his words not mine said "it was indeed a prototype and is a ways off from production. I asked how far off is "a ways" he said that I don't know. So my guess would be Summer/fall at the earliest for the R6.

Thanks for the information. I think I can wait it out. :)

In early summer, I plan to water test an R5 VP380 my dealer has in stock. I'll make a plan after that. We should know more about the timing of the R6 by then. In the mean time, I'm pretty happy with my R3.

Some updated information on the R series. I've seen pictures of a completed R8 and I was told the R6 is the same except for the shortened hull. I'm told the first R6 production boat will be built in April. After that initial boat is completed, production will start with the first boats being delivered to dealers in July (2020).

The R6 is similar to the pictures we have seen online - that boat was an R8. It will be heavier than the current boat with tweaks to the hull, but the hull shape will be substantially the same as the R5. There will be a different stringer system though.

I was unaware that the R3, R5, R7 all have the same hull shape and depth. I had thought the R5, R7 was deeper. I now understand that the odd series (3, 5, 7) hull design started with the R5, was lengthened for the R7 and then shortened to create the R3.

Based on what I've been told, for those trying to decide between and R5 and waiting for an R6, I don't think you could go wrong picking an R5, even though the R6 is around the corner. Plus there are bound to be some deals.
