No worries Slide. Nobody is as big of a cheap b*****d as me. Buy low and hopefully sell high or even!
I suspect they changed the I.D. of the pylon socket so folks like me couldn't come along and make our our own ski pylon if one was dropped in the lake.
There's a rubber gasket that runs around the top of the socket, but a 2" tubing fits perfectly in this series. The late model boats have a bolt thread at the bottom, but mine has a notch similar to our flag poles.
As far as the notch goes... I'm not even sure its necessary. We had a pretty good breeze the other day and it did fine. If the wind blows hard enough to blow it up and out of that sleeve you are going to have bigger problems than losing your umbrella !

My cheap $30 Walmarket umbrella took a dump on me yesterday. We parked in a cove out of the wind but ended up drifting out where it caught the breeze. The pole snapped just above the angle fitting.
I figured it would go south at some point being as cheap as it is. Sam's has a Sumbrella model for about a hundred bucks, so I guess I'll try it next.

Sooner....do you have you pylon handy? Can you measure it?
My pylon just slides down and then screws into the recepticle
I do not it is in the boat in the slip. I really like the idea of the umbrella on the beach or anchored so I am going to grab it this weekend when we head down. Then I am going to try and have my guys in the shop fab something. Stay tuned and I will update!
Hey Sooner. How about something like the pylon but hollow and with a large headed thumbscrew in the side to hold a “standard” type umbrella that slips in. Then also can use on beach as needed. (Note this idea is now copyrighted). I have been thinking this to use for both.

You shouldn't need a thumbscrew Suthern. If the wind is blowing enough to pick it up out of the stainless pipe you'll have bigger problems anyway.
For the time it lasted though, it was great. For us folks in the southern heat, we all know what it's like on a sunny day and how hot it can get out from under the bimini. This umbrella hack is pretty awesome..

Why don't you just run a tarp to a pole from the unicorn. Lol
Maybe you could add table bases in your platform and put poles in them to hold it up too. McTarp

I just got back from vacation a couple of hours ago. I'm going to see what I can do tomorrow on the lathe and welder. But I need one last bit of info - the bolt thread for the insert... Can someone measure that for me? My guess is it's probably around 1/2-13, but I'd rather not guess.

My findings are not actually for a R series however I have found that if you take a piece of 1-1/4” schedule 40 PVC and sand it down a hair it will slide nicely into the ski pylon on my SD series.
Then go to your local ACE Hardware store and buy the 9’ umbrella they have on sale right now for 29.99 and it will slide perfectly into the PVC sleeve.
Honestly it was extremely easy and total cost was less than $40.

Here are a few pics I took at my shop this afternoon.
It’s not as high tech as sliderule’s but I believe it’s a tad above redneck!

Could someone please instruct this dumb ol’ country boy how to make the pics where you don’t have to strain a neck muscle to look at them! Thanks in advance.
