Colin on my 240 I put the subwoofer in the enclosure in front of the helm. It sounds pretty good! I'm not an audiophile, and it doesn't give you the Thump Thump Thump like a woofer at your feet would, but it still works pretty darn good.

Sweet. The enclosure approach holds a lot of appeal:

1. No need to drill a hole!!!
2. Wiring will be dead simple as the enclosure box will be in the same compartment as the amp. No need to run any wires.
3. When I sell the boat, it's easy to remove the enclosure box and use it for my next Cobalt
4. I have more flexibility to tune / size the enclosure box to the sub. Not sure if the factory location is enclosed and what the volume is (if it is enclosed).
5. Cost of an enclosure for a 10" sub is less than having a professional cut the hole in the cockpit. It's also exponentially less costly than me messing things up and having to pay for a repair!
6. I'm not looking to wake up the neighbourhood with the bass hits

Unless the CC crew thinks the sound is going to be way better from a sub mounted in the factory position, I think the enclosure is the way to go.

Go for it Colin. Your biggest issue will be keeping unneeded things from vibrating.

....and nice setup Ytmsn.. You're really kickin' it!

Here it is rotated for ya'...

ColinC wrote: Mon Feb 12, 2018 1:26 pm Thanks Driller. I *think* the factory location for my '07 212 is in front of the port side captain's chair near the floor. I will have to research. Though my DIY skills are solid, if I go this route I suspect I will get a pro to cut the hole. No margin for error on this!
The thing about going for the box enclosure is that you can always change your mind later. Just mount a speaker which can be moved to the factory position later if you don't like the sound. Nothing lost but the cost of the enclosure.

Or better yet, keep the enclosure and add a second in the factory location.

I had mine professionally installed. I was afraid of the same thing as you ColinC.

ColinC wrote: Mon Feb 12, 2018 2:38 pm Here's an '07 222 with the subwoofer. I'm 99.9% sure this is also the factory location for my '07 212.

Anyone have a sense of how difficult it is to *safely* drill a hole for a subwoofer? Views on whether to go with the subwoofer mounted (i) in the factory location; or (ii) in a subwoofer enclosure box that I'd keep in the port side bow storage compartment?
Yep, that looks like where everyone has mounted them. I saw a couple where they used the Captain's side, but I would stay away from that. Last thing you need is the bass when you're trying to pay attention to passengers.

Btw...I'm a little disappointed to see all the screws that "vibrated" out of that top cushion hatch hinge, Ytmsn. Your 262 better not be missing any. We have higher standards here on this forum. ;) :D

Let me guess...you are a Tom Cruise stunt double too.

That's just the colors the installer picked when he took the photo. Probably spent 2k figuring out which colors will pry the cold cash from the customer's hand the easiest. Boat is at the dealer having the gelcoat repaired, then the mechanical, then back to the slip. Came out of the water Jan 5th. Jezzz. I'm ready to get it back home so that I can play with all the new toys and send you guys / gal some real pics.

Colin I don't have much time in the 222 with the stereo it has a 10 inch box but compared to my 220 I had with the factory sub it's a huge diff. Again my wife hates stereos loud and thumping. I'm going to stick a 12 inch box sub in the same spot. Just because I already have one. But I can tell that extra weight is in the boat. Weighs as much as a small kid.lol.
The factory spot on the 220 inside of that storage area has the wood or starboard already cut out just has carpet over it.
It will sound better, you also get a enclosed sub for that spot.

That looks like a nice clean setup. What size amp are you using for the amp ?

I have about 3k worth of stuff we clearly need in my shopping cart at crutchfield. Perhaps next year. Really drooling over the JL Audio M800/8v2. 75 Watts x8? Yes please, I think Katie may even be able to hear it over the captians call.
