Pack's purchase of the winery in Napa almost bankrupted Colbalt
.
Did not realize the impact of this on their business model as well.
With Paxon taking the helm in 2007; Pack’s winery direction; & the market collapse in 2008, it’s really a perfect storm that culminated with the takeover by Malibu Boats in 2017.

.

I can't find the article but wasn't the amount that Cobalt is looking for in the 10Mil range?

Btw, the judgment awarded to Cobalt was 2.7 M due to the blatant patent infringement by Sea Ray (Brunswick).

Discussed here...

A7 Thanks for the article I couldn't remember the amount. I see Brunswick has put Sea Ray up for sale?

Sure.

Sea Ray has been bleeding money. They lost 17.2 M dollars in 2017.

Since Sea Ray accounts for over a 1/4 of Brunswick’s total boat sales, Brunswick put them up for sale in December due to their losses.
It will be interesting to see who buys them and for how much.

Losing money in the boat manufacturing business in this retail climate? Wonder how much Sea Ray would be losing in a bad economy!

IMHO,
A Sea Ray is pretty ugly on the inside. Very squared off in the nose, and not that sharp on the outside either. We weren't interested, not even a little bit.
For me, its Cobalt and Formula, period.

Some of the new SLX boats aren't bad looking. But they are pretty much at the same price point as a r series Cobalt. So to me it would be a no brainier to go with Cobalt over the sea ray SLX

As for the sale of Cobalt, the 2008 crisis and the closing of the cruiser plant and Pack's purchase of the winery in Napa almost bankrupted Colbalt. So I'm guessing that those events scared the Sh*t of the St. Clair's and Pack and Packson are getting out while the getting is good? Plus I thought it was also interesting that the on going law suit against Sea Ray on the folding swim platform patent was not part of the sale to Malibu? I can't find the article but wasn't the amount that Cobalt is looking for in the 10Mil range?
The Vonore, TN was plant closed in late 2007. The decision was made about a year before that. (And about a year before the financial crisis.) It was closed because of three production reasons, and one strategic error (all of which the company acknowledges publicly.) The products were behind schedule, over budget, and below Cobalt quality standards. The strategic error was placing operations in a location where they could not ensure quality execution on a daily basis. The then president of that division was not as competent as those operating the Neodesha plant.

Neither Cobalt nor Pack purchased a winery. Around 2005, Mr. St. Clair entered into a joint venture with the Sherwin Family Vineyards to produce a Cabernet Sauvignon under the name "Cobalt Wine." (Steve Sherwin and his family own the vineyard.) It was a typical cross-branding strategy.
