Looks like our IPad does not have gps. I don't know. Some friends have asked why I don't get a portable one. I am not against that, but I don't know how that transducer mounts, where the screen goes, etc. etc. This might just be more hassle than it's worth.

Correct, my iPad Mini does not have built in GPS either. That's where the Bad Elf dongle comes in. It provides EXCELLENT GPS service, and after using it can say I would highly recommend it. Link here: https://bad-elf.com/pages/be-gps-1008-detail

I have a nice soft case for the iPad and it stays in the boats. Has a nice little side pocket as well (zippered), that the bad elf dongle and charge cable can live in. At the ramp or slip while waiting on my wife and kids to do their normal Potty stop, I have a couple mins to get out the iPad and get it setup and running before heading out for the day. I did put on an anti-glare overlay on the iPad and that helps a lot. Just used a cheapo one from amazon that was like $10 for three overlay sheets.

YES on the anti-glare, that was so annoying last summer so I'll be ordering that now. The other issue I had with it mounted on the windshield was the iPad occasionally overheating and shutting down. Only an issue when sitting still for a while, like at the food boat or something, but still annoying as it takes a good 10-15min to get it cooled off and powered back up. Guess I'll just have to tint the windows unless someone has a better idea?

I really only had that issue once, and that was when we stopped to cove out and forgot to turn it off. Once we got underway it was fine to power on and operate.

It's not a perfect solution, but fits my requirements now which is giving me depth on a GPS map without drilling another transducer hole, or permanently modifying my dash in some fashion. That's really all I am after.

yeah, unfortunately on our chain you NEED a depth finder as it's very shallow in general, and hazardous at times if you don't know where you are.

Yeah, but finding sunken logs is harder without the sonar.

Oh yeah, had at least 7 go through this year. Have a couple marked on my old GPS, need to boot it up and mark them in Navionics.
