Looking at the back transom the extension on the R6 it has what apears to be a upward extended surface ( won’t touch the water underway) that will support that platform better.

The eggbeater version goes across fully with no cut out to support the jack plate and avoid a platform cut out.

No stress on the platform seems smart.
I like the lower body line on back as long as it doesn’t scrape docks

What’s up with the different color lower unit on the CS?
These are just test boats. they probably had that motor sitting around that blew the lower unit, slapped a different one on for testing. You can also see the interior on the black one isnt exactly finished.

Anyone else notice the first boat (grey) has split loungers on the back instead of one continuous sun pad?

I also think this might be the new surf model. Is it possible that the extended running surface we see is actually a permanent ballast tank and takes the place of the bladders in the current boats?

Definitely see some Malibu influences in the top boat if you look at the shape of the cushions on the first boat. Hopefully just a mock up

My sales person had mentioned it sounds like the new R6 will be a surf version; so 5 may continue to exist but not in a surf version.

huh that is an interesting take. instead of just putting the ballasts, surf tabs, and fwd drive on the r3,5,7 build a purpose surf model.

I've been meaning to ask the folks at the Harbor but this time of the year they are closed on the weekends so I don't really see any of the gang.

That’s how it sounded to me when I said I might wait for the 6. I also heard it’s more likely to be available in 2021.

I doubt that will be the case. I was told that the R6 will replace the R5 but that they will both sell together as the R5 product sells through.

Malibu has dedicated surf boats so the group doesn’t need one on the Cobalt side. In addition, a dedicated surf boat on the Cobalt side means an inboard/V Drive setup and a purpose built hull. The current Surf models are nice but in terms of wave height and push (quality), they don’t compete with boats like Centurian, etc.

My money is on a safe replacement of the current R5. But hey, O don’t work at Cobalt, I just spoke to someone who did.

I would be surprised if Cobalt stopped producing Forward Drive Surf versions of their R series boats. I think you are missing their intended purpose. You are correct, the Cobalt surf models do not produce a wave of the same quality as a dedicated surf boat. They are not designed to. Cobalt designed a boat that you can surf behind when you want to, but that also rides like a traditional bow rider when the tanks are empty.

If you have ever ridden across a lake in a Malibu you know they ride like crap, empty tanks or not. The majority of people I know surf for a few hours in the morning and then want to enjoy a boat ride of two across the lake in the afternoon. They are not professional wake surfers and can deal with a lesser quality wave in exchange for a better riding boat.

How about just wake surf in the afternoon then?
( he puts the lemon drop down ).

Problem solved for the Malibu owner.

I think you are missing my point. I don't believe the R6 would be a dedicated surf boat as that would require a different hull design than the current R5. Given that I've been told by Cobalt that the R5 will be phased out, an R6 Surf only boat as suggested earlier doesn't make sense. The R series boats are the bread and butter of the Cobalt lineup and not having a stern drive 25' boat would leave a big hole. I'm betting the R6 will be an updated R5 (hull, interior, etc.) that will improve its dual purpose (stern/surf) performance. I guess we'll know in a few months.

OK I was obviously confused. Must have been lost in the translation between United States English and Canadian English lol.

Agree, the R6 wont be a dedicated surf boat, but they will offer an R6 with the Forward drive and surf package. We on the same page now?

Surf in the afternoon? No way, that would mean you would be trying to be athletic after a lemonade. Recipe for disaster.

So, here's a few thoughts on the new series...

The even number hulls will likely not be in production/showrooms until 2021..or at least until the current inventory is 100% depleted.
The new boats will be all new hulls....not the same molds from the current R series with cosmetic changes.
There will be a Standard, Surf, and Outboard version of each (possibly indicating that the SD series may no longer be a stand alone line)
Significantly different interiors than what we know today in the R line, but don't know where the influences will be coming from (A series, Malibu)
Cobalt will continue to be a stand alone line with it's own distinct features and heritage, however, there will be some sharing of common components between the companies ( called that one).
Handling will still be from the famous legendary Cobalt standards, and maybe improved with the outboard initiative.
Expect the outboard version could actually be the higher end line from a pricing standpoint as this gives them a real player in the salt market (think against Formula or others in that arena)
6 will come first, then the other 2 to follow at a later date.

That's all I'll say for now... I don't want to go much further on the forum, but you can always PM...if you dare.

I'd say your time frame is about spot on. I mean look at how long it took them to go from prototype to a finished product with the A29. They unveiled it in Feb and we didn't see it again for about 8-10 months. I know they decided to swap from an android cockpit to garmin but still quite some time. The first prototype of the R6 was just shown off a few weeks ago at the dealer show. So my guess would be they bring the prototype to miami to get some customer feedback then we see production as a 2021 model. With the 4 and 8 to show up in 2022. And they continue the current R-series in 21 and cut production in 22.
