Good advice, not really sure what the shape of the tank is, but filling at 1/4 tank is a solid plan.

OK. Latest fill up at 1/4 was 35 gallons. That seems pretty close to accurate, we used our boat 5 days in a row last week and burned some fuel...so theoretically, 1/4 tank is 12.5 gallons in a 50 gallon tank. 2.5 gallons off is good enough for me. 1/4 tank is a great time for that top speed test, but also time to fill...

a pilot I know always says: don’t trust fuel gauges on engines that float or fly. I.e. don’t run below 20%…

new, happy owner of a 1986 Cobalt 19ft BR. I love this boat, what to restore some things.
Does anyone know how to remove the gas gauge? Sender and gauge need replacing.
Also, what are the buttons on the right side of the throttle? Left side is to raise and lower the engine, but what about the right side?

I'm guessing you have separate buttons for tilt & trim.

You can add a resistor to correct for a gauge that reads too full. The float has a resistance of 33 ohms at full and 240 ohms at empty. If you want to correct by 40% a little math says you would need to add approx 80 ohms, but that seems like a lot of resistance to add. Resistors are inexpensive. Buy a bunch in 10 ohm increments and experiment a bit. Or you can get a 0 to 100 ohm fine-tune variable resistor (potentiometer) and you'll be able to dial-in whatever you need.
