Re: question on oil changing
Well, I think I have the oil change scenario under control now. It turns out that the dipstick hole has a standard hose connection built right on it. After a brief search, I decided to get this pump unit. I should be all set now.

The engine is fuel injected. Thanks to all you folks for helping me understand what I have here and how best to handle oil changes etc. I have to be able to do all this stuff myself because there isn't anyone around here to help. But I can handle it. I'm only 87 years old.

I notice that you are from Iowa. My deceased wife was from Iowa. I think she was raised in RedBird, Iowa if I recall the name correctly.

Thanks for reminding me. She was from Redfield. Old memory isn't what it once was.

I also use the Amazon pump that threads onto the dipstick Lee posted (
Initially I purchased one that had tubes you push down through the dipstick into the drain pan. Note that on at least newer Volvo engines, there is something that blocks such tubes from reaching all the way into the drain pan and thus wont work.

Re: question on oil changing
@Greenhut I'm curious about the blockage you describe in the oil pan. I changed my oil a couple of weeks ago in my new to me 2013 220 WSS with VP 300, and when pushing the small tube from fluid evacuator into the pan, it felt like it was running into something. I was concerned about it because it seemed like the amount of oil pulled out was low, like it was not ALL being sucked out. The oil was warm. Then when I put in a new filter and new 4.5 quarts of oil in, the dipstick is reading overfull. Can you please elaborate on this blockage? Is the solution to use the garden hose type pump so ALL the oil comes out? Thanks.

I'm not sure about the blockage problem. But if it has that garden hose fitting, I would assume that's what they expect you to use for oil changes.

@ Lee St.Clair Well, I use the MityVac on all kinds of engines, and it worked well on my 206. I'm just perplexed that the oil pan could be blocked (maybe it's baffled.)

Hey BA...welcome to the CobaltChat forum. So glad you found us!
Questions....
First off, any pics of your Cobalt?

Which pump are you using? We use the Moeller hand pump that connects to the dipstick tube and pull out 8 quarts from our 8.1 big block. There are indentations that tell you each quart.
With how many quarts are you ending once the pumping stops?
BTW, Bimmer fan?
Again, welcome aboard mate!

Re: question on oil changing
I wish you all the luck in the world. That pump will definitely give you a workout! I've had the best results with the canister-type vacuum pumps that cmattj posted earlier from West Marine. They typically have a hose connection to thread onto your dipstick tube included in the kit.Lee St.Clair wrote: Tue Feb 23, 2021 2:10 pm Well, I think I have the oil change scenario under control now. Pretty simple task.
1. Warm engine (drink a beer during this step)
2. Connect hoses & give it 10 pumps or so
3. Crack open another cold beer & sit back until oil stops flowing
4. Change filter & fill up the crankcase with new oil
5. Crack open another cold beer & tell everyone you've been working all day and you deserve it!

@A7 Thanks for the reply. I have a MityVac. I'm going to look for a garden hose adapter for it.
