AsLan7- thanks. The pictures help. I am like you. I don’t care about the presets. Don’t really get much of a signal on the water anyway. I just wanted the Bluetooth connection.

So I've sourced pretty much everything for the budget build stereo upgrade. Here's what I've got so far:
  • Head Unit - Sony MEXGS610BT
  • Speakers - Polk DB651 (four for the cockpit and two for the bow)
  • Subwoofer - Polk DB1040 Single Voice Coil
  • Sub Box - Atrend Pro Series 10 TK
  • Amplifier - Kenwood KAC M8005
  • Amp Install Kit - NVX APK4
  • RCA Interconnects - Stinger SI623
  • Speaker Wire - InstallGear 14 Gauge AWG 100ft
Total cost for all the materials was approximately $660. I'm an aftermarket audio noob, so it will be interesting to see how this package works. Hope to get everything installed in late April / early May and hear the difference over the original Sony products from 2007!!

Yup, I like them. But now I'm thinking I want to change thier color to black.

The grills are easy to paint. Apparently Krylon Fusion spray paint works well on them. I thought about painting them white but saw the stock units in a Cobalt with my colour scheme and they’ve grown on me so I will keep them silver for now.

Nice Colin! Is your amp 8 channel or are you going to end up with a separate amp for the sub?

B I had black grill Polks in my 240 and wasn't crazy about them. The thought of painting never occurred to me but silver or white would have been better.

The amp is a 5 channel. The plan is to run the two bow speakers from the head unit and the four cockpit speakers from the amp. Fifth channel will run the sub. Specs from Kenwood are as follows:

RMS power rating:
4 ohms: 50 watts x 4 chan. + 300 watts x 1 chan.
2 ohms: 75 watts x 4 chan. + 500 watts x 1 chan.
4 ohms: 150 watts x 2 chan. (bridged) +300 watts x 1 chan.

Total power output: 1600 watts

I had thought about running two amps, but opted to go with a single five channel to keep things simple. The Kenwood gets very good reviews and from what I've researched it should be quite capable of delivering all the power I need.

My boat had black kickers and I thought they looked better than my silver polks. Just not sure if I want to go through the trouble of painting them. I also wonder how well the paint will hold up.

A7, how hard was this to install? Did you do it yourself? Also, does it loose preset memory when you turn batteries off? I am thinking of buying this unit. Ty

I don't bother with marine head units. Not worth the extra cost if protected in a glove compartment. If not protected then perhaps that would be a consideration.
