R5 350 VOLVO PROP CHANGE

Post by Sieben »

My 2020 came with an RH6 PROP and a 350 motor. Damaged my prop and the prop shop is suggesting replacing it with an RH5. Cost is the same, will there be a noticeable performance difference? It's a subject that I'm not familiar with...

Acceleration will improve and top end will suffer.

I can live with that. Family gets grumpy over 40MPH but I will appreciate the acceleration, especially from 5-20MPH were the boat feels sluggish to get on plane. Thanks!

I wish we could have traded props before the damage. I have a FH5 and think I really need FH6.

Yea most want to go up in pitch not down. I think your the first one to complain of a hole shot.
Watch your rpms!
You will get a better hole shot. More gas. More fun!

I know, it's an odd sensation on my R5, almost like it hesitates and then takes off. My last several boats were diesel so I think I'm too torqe sensitive at low speeds. I tend to cruise not much higher than 35MPH as the crew complains and drinks spill.

I had no idea what you were talking about with "torque sensitive" until I bought a diesel SUV. Love the torque, hate the maintenance.
35 is pretty much top cruising speed for us too.

My R5 350 came with a FH6 set. Plenty of torque and on plane in 3+ seconds. From being sluggish and tops out around 53, Operate at 0' altitude so that may explain, don't know.

How many rpm are you turning at 53?

What gear ratio is in your boats with the 350 hp Volvo’s? I have an R5 with the VP380, 2.14 gear ratio and it has FH4 props. The boat jumps out of the hole, even with 8-10 people on the boat but only runs about 50-51 trimmed up.

When trimmed up I can get 6000rpm which I think is where the 6.0 is supposed to run. My props are in good condition so I really don’t have a reason to buy a new set just to experiment but I have wondered what a set of FH5’s would do for me on the top end.

2.32 with FH6 with 2018 R5 with 350. Jumps out of the hole and has fantastic midrange acceleration. I'd guess that you'd lose 2 to 3 mph top end with FH5s. I have been wondering how FH7s would work on my boat. I average 3.14 mpg at 32 mph now.
