Alarm Beep and Engine Not Starting Confusion

Post by smithers7632 »

Hi All,

First post here. 2nd summer of owning 2019 R3. I was able to buy the dealer's 'club' boat so it had a lot of hours (250) on it but ran great all last year and no problems at all. This year started fine (besides my anchor falling off but that is another issue) and now I am getting strange alarm when I try to start the boat up. At my slip, from a cold start, I have no issues. But the past two days after cruising/tubing around and then parking in the lake to swim and relax, when I went to restart the boat, I turn the key and I just get beeps. The first time it happened, I turned the boat off at the main power, turned back on and was able to start right away. Yesterday, I went from my slip to the gas dock to fill up, waited 5 minutes with blower on, and same issue. I played around with key and trying to start it but just the beeping. Did the turn off trick and just beeping. Sat there for 5-10 minutes and checked nothing in prop, shift was in nuetral, latch was secure....I was about to give up but tried one last time and fired up no problem. In that idle time, my garmin screens went from fully up to crashing to fully up again. I took it out and ran the engine to make sure the batteries were charged etc and no issues there. Parked and swam for 2 hours. This time, I turned the key one click to the right, waited for Garmin Screens to come on (about a minute) and then started no issues. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Smithers

Hello Smithers. So glad you found us!

Tough to diagnose that over the internet. Sounds like an intermittent issue that needs to be checked by the dealer....especially since you have used this boat for over a year and a half and now just started having this problem. The dealer/Merc or VP tech can hook up to the ECU and read the codes.

Any pics of this elusive R3? Let's get you fixed.

And welcome aboard mate!

i had the same problem. mine ran perfect all last year. soon as i replaced the flame shield and sensor down hill from there. i have replaced fuel pump all the sensors and plugs and wires throttle position sensor literally everything. the alarm isnt beeping but the boat wont accelerate its like its in limp mode or something. takes forever to plain out. once it does it starts picking up speed once there really isnt a load on the motor. what do i do.

Definitely contact your local cobalt dealer.
While you are doing that keep in mind that there is a volvo interface (I assume merc too) near the throttle, this is likely to display error messages and such. I don't think the Garmin will display the message.
My brothers boat started beeping last year (though no starting issues) Saw the code there and was told how to silence the alarm and told that they would pull the boat at the end of season and fix the sensor.
I assume you would have checked but check the switch that you are supposed to wear as the driver incase you fall overboard. I hit that one time by accident and took me a few to figure out what had happened, this will cause it not to start and will trigger an alarm.

Thanks Norris and Tanner. I did not think of checking the Volvo interface but will do - good idea. I just downloaded the apps for Volvo and Garmin and going to see it I can find an error code. Thankfully, so far, I am able to get the boat started eventually but it is a process. And it does not give you much confidence out on Lake Michigan to stray too far.

Had this issue this weekend. 2020 R7 Surf. Pretty intense tubing session, turned off engine to pull rope/tube in, tried to restart and only got a beep. All gauges read normal. Turned off main power and waited about 10 minutes and engine started back up. Decided to allow motor to idle a bit after next tubing session before killing it and didn’t have the issue again all day. Not sure what error code was thrown but looks like it resets itself. Any clue as to what is happening here?

You should start a new thread with your issue.
