Twins--at what price

Every boat I've owned at LOTO has been 30'+ and has had twins. For our lake it's pretty much a necessity. The 302 with twin 5.7gxi's is a great setup. Only downside is maintenance x 2 but comes with the territory.

I've co-owned a few river boats (Mississippi), the largest being a 272 Islander, and I can say the single for sure is the way to go. I'd vote for single anything under 28'. I could dock that Baja on a dime even with the current, never had any issues.

We're taking the 252 to LOTO for the Shootout and my Wife is afraid our boat will be too small...We boat on the busiest inland lake in the country per acre, I can't imagine it's that much worse at LOTO? Am I wrong in thinking that 25' will be fine down there?

last time I went to the shootout I still had my Baja 272 and we stayed off the Niangua arm and I can tell you the little bit we were in the channel after the no wake we were taking water over the front of the bow. Like Smokes said go early and stay late. Or stay up the channel past the 35mm.

Thankfully the house we rented is literally at the finish line, maybe MM 32.5 I think? The owners have a 22’ Hurricane deck boat and they said it’s fine. We’ll just go early and hook up, then we’ll have a jet ski to go back to the house for whatever. I did plan to just stay until the crowds clear out. We’re going a few days early so we can go exploring during the week before it gets crazy. Thanks for the input!

Mercedes and BMW both make inline six cylinder engines - I wonder if that's a reasonable solution to putting twins in a boat that's in the nine foot wide range? If the boat is under 30 feet long, it's not like you'd need more than a few hundred horsepower per engine, so a 3L should in theory be just fine.

Now whether BMW will sell B58 blocks to Volvo is another question. Or maybe the B57 diesel blocks, just to make it interesting

BMW has a history of selling in the marine market, both gas and diesel, so it's not out of the realm of possibility. Would be awesome to put an ///M badge on a boat, lol.

Just a word of warning......while underway always assume other boaters don't see you (or for matter even when your not underway). Because they probably dont...even in the middle of the channel. I'm not familiar with your lake, but one of the issues with LOTO is the sheer number of 35'+ boats on a lake that really isn't that wide in a lot of places. There are also lots of 50-60' boats. The effect is 6' wakes churning like a washing machine in heavily trafficked areas.

As to the topic thread.....I think if they were an option on any boat I'd probably take it. Just cause....

Yeah, aside from 40' being the largest we see on the Chain you're describing any weekend for us. Busiest inland body of water in the US per acre, and 90% of the people have no idea what they're doing.

You will be more than fine if you're up that way! They also changed the no wake a few years ago to try and avoid the madness of everyone leaving at once. If you are in a big enough boat it's a blast, but I can say I'd never do it again at this point.

The street party is pretty cool too. If you make it down to Osage Beach, you should check out Backwater Jack's. Some of the best food on the water and they have a nice setup with their pool.

After reading this one, I'm glad we didn't purchase a trailer so now we cannot be tempted to go to events like this.

My input on twins: it'd be nice to afford a boat that big and having to make a choice.

One question though, how much worse is tubing / skiing behind twin engines? I've never done it.

We used to tube behind our 293 with twins. It was one of those on-your-belly tubes and when snaking back & forth, riders couldn't see over the huge wake when plowing that slow. Made for a rather freaky experience at first, but the kids never minded.
