Welcome to the group here tallrobbo. I have a Cobalt 190 .It's a 1996 so the first one they made. I can't see anything on this boat that would be a rot problem. It's pure fiberglass everywhere I can see. I have the 5.0 engine. I can't verify speed because it's a brand new engine with 3 hours so far and not broken in but the previous owner says it does 52 MPH by the GPS. That's faster than I need to be going anyway. You'll love the boat.

I guesss I have committed treason. My 190 has a swim platform, tower, bimini, and swim pad to boot! :D
Boattime.... where did you get your aftermarkets? I don’t want to rock the literal or proverbial boat but I have a young one so we need a Bimini and Swim platform.

Poke around for a 5.0 or 5.7 duo if you can on that setup and you'll be pumped.

How dare you call the greatest boat ever made fat.

Our 190 was propped up a bit but we hit low 50's with the 4.3.
What was the prop set up? I am trying to get my 2000 to around 50mph. Has the Mercruiser 4.3 EFI and Alpha 1/Gen2 drive. But only hitting 43 mph at 5000 rpm, so something seems off. Thanks!

Chaos, can you go to your boat and read the stampings on the propeller you do have? We'll be able to help a lot more if we have an idea why your boat is underperforming. It could be something else entirely, like old gas, but knowing what you do have makes it a lot easier to suggest if a change may be worthwhile.

That will be part 2 for me since I am not with the boat. What I am trying to learn here is how others got to 50 mph in a 190 with a 4.3. What was the prop selection? I’d find that info really helpful!

Wish I could help, we sold the 190 about 7 years ago and I honestly cant remember the pitch of the prop on it. It did hit about 50mph GPS, she was a fun boat.

I know a few places around me will let you trial a prop prior to purchase? Maybe go up a size and see? It's not much boat to get up out of the water so going up a bit on pitch shouldnt hurt your time to plane too terribly much and may give you the top end you are looking for.

I will say 5000rpm seems about right for WOT RPM for the 4.3 so not sure you have much left there to pudgy as they say.

Reanimating the thread. Now has a Michigan Wheel Ballistic 19 pitch. 4.3L still barely gets to 45 mph. GPS Speedo. My RpMs properly trimmed at 4400. I think I maxed out.
Any chance those prior memories of 50 mph were wishful memories?

"My RpMs properly trimmed at 4400."

Is that WOT or cruising rpm?

Apparently, prop diameter can also affect speed. But the technical issues are beyond my understanding.
