Bought my first.. 22T?

Post by MetalAuto »

I have always been the guy who had friends with boats but never actually had one myself. Wife and I have been discussing buying a boat for a little while now and I decided it was time for a project. BTW, she doesnt know I bought it and I dont plan on showing her until it is ready to go and all the bugs have been worked out.

I bought it knowing it is going to need some work, theft recovery.

It was advertised as a 92 223 and when you run the VIN that is what comes back but based on what I see online it is actually a 22T. I guess the 22T used the 223 hull?

So what are the inherent issues with this model I need to be looking for? Engine will most likely be coming out as I doubt it was winterized and I am SURE there are going to been issues related to that.

Thank in advance for your knowledge and suggestions

Looks like a great boat to work with. I think you have the majors all covered. Im not very inclined with this era of Cobalt but I believe it may have some wood in the transom and stringers, I would do some test for wood rot in these areas if so.

Hey MA...welcome to the CobaltChat forum. So glad you found us!

The 22 was a solid model that came out of the world headquarters in Neodesha. :D That gel coat will shine up like a new baby's bottom. Like mentioned above, check for any wood rot in the transom and stringers to make sure the structural integrity is solid.

Change all fluids, filters, spark plugs and impeller. How does the gas smell?

Prestige makes a nice trailer. Make sure the bearings are lubed and the brakes are operating correctly. I'd change the tires if they are over 4 years old or show cracking. We always say boat=break out another thousand. Keep us apprised of your progress. Quite a bit of wisdom & knowledge on this site.

Again welcome aboard mate!

With a boat that old you're going to find something out of the ordinary, but it's hard to guess what that might be. Keep us updated on your progress and what you find, and congrats on your project boat!

Thanks for the welcome. I hope to begin the project in the next few weeks. I stay pretty busy with work so hopefully a nice sunny weekend w/o a pre-made to do list will appear soon. First thing I plan on doing is removing the engine bay cover, giving everything from front to rear a good power washing and checking the engine over. If everything looks good I'll try to fire it up.

So this era it sounds like did for sure have wood in the transom and stringers correct?

There is a local place that just detailed a blue one and brought the finish back from the dead so I cant wait till I get that far along on the process to make it really shine.

BTW, the boat came out of SW Missouri and I know its a stretch but by chance does anyone recognize it? Know the previous owner? Long shot but I thought I might ask.
