2019 Ford F-150 3.5 eco boost max tow pulling a 2014 R5 on a 2020 Loadmaster trailer. This truck handles the boat like it isn’t even there. The trailer is hands down the nicest trailer I have ever pulled!

Hey T, have you been using the receiver mounted flaps very long? I’m curious because quite a few years ago I ran receiver mounted flaps that were like a long bristled brush. After one year the front edges of my trailer and axels looked like they were sand blasted. They didn’t drag on the ground either, probably 3 or so inches off the ground. It maybe kept the rocks from hitting the trailer & boat but it kicked up enough sand and fine debris to sand blast my trailer. I sold the thing on Craigslist after a year. I’m curious if the solid flaps do the same?

Well shoot I was just about to get the brooms to save our new boat. Our old 220 was trailer-ed all over by the previous owners and it had a considerable amount of rock chips on the hull sides. So what do I need to save the new one? We plan on going everywhere with this new boat.

I’ve used the Rock Star mud flap every time I have pulled me R5 since it was new. Probably have 5K miles towing and haven’t found any rock chips on the boat or trailer yet. The only issue I’ve had is someone caught it with their boat trailer and bent it at Lake Powell. There was shattered tail light parts laying on the ground by my truck. One thing I like about the Rock Star is that it doesn’t get in the way of the backup sensors.

Hmmm. My guess is that the issue is fine road grit getting stirred up from the stiffer brush/flaps blocking air flow. That’s a potential problem..i’ll keep an eye on that. Thanks for the heads up. I never considered that possibility.

My flaps are softer rubber so they do sail, and hopefully don’t kick up the grit, but it could still happen. They are usually 3-4” off the ground at highway speed. Hopefully it’s enough to stop crap from hitting the hull and trailer fenders, but not enough to kick up the fine stuff.

Some pretty good tips here on flaps/brooms. My wife ran across a set of used brooms for a quarter of new price. After checking out towtector website I found that the bottom needs to be about 3-4 inches off the ground. This may be the sweet spot for them and flaps to knock down rocks and not sweep the ground. While I dont want rock blasting on anything I would rather the trailer take the hit instead of the boat.

This is probably one of those cases where if you do something to protect the boat its better than nothing.

Never thought to ask. We drive a mile to the lake. Put the boat in. End of season we load her up, drive her home wrapped, store her on the property. Repeat. We don’t even have a tow vehicle
It is brand new and made it without any drama from fla to NJ. It’s next big trip will be in three years when we move to Dewey Beach.
What kind of problems can I expect? It’s my first boat.

Truth.
Torsion axles are totally out for any future trailers I buy.
I have two out of five trailers with, and if you aren’t sitting totally level, expect tire issues.
