R5 Swim step damage

I have a 2020 R5 and didn't realize the swim step was contacting the prop with the outdrive full up. I just noticed there is some damage to the edge of the swim step, chipping, scratches, etc. Anyone know what the cost is to replace the swim step?

Why replace the swim step? Take it to a fiberglass repair shop and have it fixed. Pics of the damage?

Hey abuesing. Welcome to the Cobaltchat forum. So glad you found us!

That’s a not too uncommon issue with Cobalts (and many other boats) regarding swim step and ladder contact by the prop when raising the outdrive full up. Not the best design.

Any pics of the damage? I don’t think I’d replace the entire step unless it was severe. Good fiberglass technicians can work wonders these days.

Btw, how is your R5 powered?

I got some swim step damage for an unrelated reason on a 2013 swim step. I think the out the door price to replace the whole step from the dealer was around $600-$700. It was about 4 years ago. The service department could give me a price without looking anything up so swim damage is not uncommon. I ended up buying a gel coat repair kit for $50 and DIY'd it. Not a perfect repair, only I could see the repair area. My thought was, even if I make it look worse, I am not going to make the repair or replace price go up and I could get done faster myself in the middle of summer than hauling out and taking the boat to the dealer. I would try to mentally erase it and enjoy the rest of the summer. If the damage isn't on the non-skid, it is a very easy repair. Deal with it in the off season. Congrats on the new boat!
