R5 in rough water
Hi All,
Scoping out the 2020 r5 with the 380 volvo and was wondeing how it handles the rough stuff. I boat mostly on big sebago in Maine and it can get pretty rough in the afternoons. My last boat was a fourwinns H210 and i took a beating....

I am also serious about a 2015 chaparral 277ssx with a merc 8.2Ho.

What’s your definition of rough water? Wave height frequency and period would be helpful. Wind speed?

The R5 will handle the rough water better than the Four Winns. I’m surprised you’re not considering the R7 if you’re thinking about the 277SSX.
The Chaparral will ride nicely with a 22.5 degree deep vee dead rise. The fit and finish will not compare to a Cobalt though. That being said, the 277SSX with that HO engine package is a nice setup. I’m not a fan of their smaller ski locker, raised back seat look and overall arch lines.
You have some great options. Please post pics of whatever you choose. We enjoy all boats here.

Thanks! I would say 3' breakers and consistent thats the worst part. The distance between them is really short. I guess what i am getting at is its not like a rolling wave say on a ocean. I am looking at the r7 as well but used! A little out of my budget and its hard to find them with the 430hp. As one of the other posters mentioned i am a gear head as well and really want the CC and big power. I agree on the fit and finnish yet feel the chaparral with its lenght and 22 degree dead rise will not only span the breakers but cut through them. Did I hear 430? You have my attention now. Yea 430 and cc good luck. Very few in a Cobalt. These guys are really old that buy them and like it quiet.

Really the 380 will do just fine in a used or new r7. That boat will have zero bow lift and is on plane in 2 seconds. It's very impressive. Don't look at suggested retail prices. If you can find a 2019 yet r you can get it around 120ish I'm sure depending on options of course. I rode on tgraces r7 and he calls it a wave crusher for a reason. It just flattens them out. Yes the 4winns is 22 degrees but the hull design and weight won't compare to a Cobalt. I was on a new chap and I didn't like much about the boat quality wise. They had some good ideas though.
R7 will fit your needs better than a R5. I bet even a R5 will ride better than that chap.
Some of the r5 guys will come in that run larger bodies of water.
What is the budget we can find you a new or used ride. Remember when buying a new Cobalt you have to buy from your local dealer.

My Neighbor has a Chapparal 265 ssi. It’s 10 years old and the interior shelf life is half of what a Cobalt would be.
May I suggest looking at the two mfg in a 10 year version so you can determine what you will see in 10 years?
Cobalt hands down just in overall shelf life. That’s why the resale is higher.
Oh rough water rides may be comparable with the dead rise and weight, but it will be the construction difference after years of pounding that will show up as interior cracks and looseness on lower quality hulls.

Thank you all for the great valuable info! My dealer does have a left over r7. Its probably going to be out of my range especially since i will need a trailer as well. The dealer already said he could get it in the 120s.

I have a 2014 R5 with a VP 380. I is a great boat for the lakes and rivers that we boat. I am located in central MN and mostly boat on the St Croix river, sometimes we end up in some of the larger lakes in northern MN. On the weekends it can get very busy there with all sizes of boats from small fishing boats to the large cruisers on the StCroix. Last year we spent a week in the Ozarks. The R5 handles whatever the large lakes and rivers can throw at it very well. We have trim tabs on our R5 and they help a lot to level out an uneven load of people or while running on plane and getting hit on the side with wind and waves. Obviously if you come upon the wake of a large cruiser that isn’t quite on plane and just plowing water you have to slow slightly and put the bow in the air to ride through the wake. I had two SeaRays prior to this Cobalt, 1st being a 20’ SeaRay 205 with a small V8 and 2nd was a 210 SLX with a 350 mag and BRIII (fun boat). Obviously the R5 is much larger than our previous SeaRays but it handles the wakes so much better it isn’t even funny! It is rare that we get wet from a wave with the R5 and I have never had water over the bow over this boat.
My wife was always uncomfortable (slightly nervous) in rough waters with our previous boats but now she just sits back and relaxes

Honestly it wouldn't surprise me 1 bit that Cobalt doesn't come out with something big. Lol at what the car manufacturers did. This is going to kill all of these manufacturers. Even the dealerships are going to need to do something. The used market could get flooded also.
