Does your trim at the throttle work with the ignition off?

Post by jasondon »

My boat is at the shop (without the key)
and they are telling me the trim at the throttle is not working, but trim at the stern is.

Does your trim at the throttle work with the key off?

Wondering if something is not working properly or if this is normal.

Thanks!

Mine doesn't, key needs to be in the on position. Same for the bilge hatch. The transom trim control is probably wired directly to the trim solenoid and battery so you can run it with the boat covered.

on my 262 the key had to be in the on position to raise the drive from the throttle. Transom tilt switch would raise the drive as long as the battery switch was on. No key required.

My new boat I didn't get the transom switch as my boat lives in a covered slip and rarely if ever gets loaded on a trailer.

I just jumped in my boat it works with no key and I have the transom switch. I would have thought they all worked without a key in it.

I have forgotten my key for my annual maintenance before and they said no worries as they have plenty of keys they can use. This is on an old 01 though.

Yeah all the dealers have one of each key, I believe there are only 4 different key combinations.

Trim switch on the throttle only raises up to max operating trim level. Have to use the "trailer" button to raise beyond that.

Is this a merc or Volvo? Volvo won't have the trim stop.

Follow up for any future readers....My trim only works at the throttle with the key on... Perhaps this is only models with the transom control.

What Smokes said. And my throttle trim only works with the key on. Transom trim anytime.

Isn't this only true on Mercs? I thought Volvos didn't have trim limit switches.

Yes. My VP side mounted throttle trim switch would raise the outdrive all the way up to the trailering position.

Our Merc has the separate trailering switch under the throttle handle to raise the outdrive all the way up to the trailering position.

Both the VP and Merc side mounted throttle switches required the key to be turned out of the off position & the battery switch ON in order to provide power to raise the drive from the throttle. (Wired to the Switched battery bus)

The transom mounted trim switch was wired to the Switched HOT battery bus allowing the transom switch to function as long as the battery switch was not in the OFF position. The ignition key position did not matter

I eventually plan to install a transom trim switch, but I'm going directly to the battery. I want to be able to control the trim with the boat on the trailer, covered, and the battery switch off. Seems kinda pointless if the battery switch needs to be on, as in my case, if the switch is on the boat is opened up and ready to run.
