Drive service question
Drive service question
My dealer just performed a drive service. I took the boat out yesterday for the first time since. Here is a picture of the port drive after lifting back out of the water. Notice the milky white substance. What could have caused this? Sloppy cleanup or something to actually worry about?

Re: Drive service question
Almost looks like it's coming out of the top cap, are the bolts tight that hold it down?

Re: Drive service question
Yes. I am hoping it was just overfilled and not cleaned up well. We'll see.

Re: Drive service question
I'd send that pic to the dealer and get ahead of any issues you may have down the road.

Oh, believe me I already have. They are looking at it today. I will share the outcome.

Re: Drive service question
Yea that looks odd. The color doesn't look like oil mixed with water. I agree it looks like it's coming from that too cover. There would be no reason for them to remove that. Reach down and check that dipstick on top. Is it tight.
Yea interested in what they say

Any signs of the oil in water behind the boat? I see a slight scum line on the transom is why im curious if possible you weren't looking as you docked and put it on the lift.
As a seal leak can draw water in the out drive and over fill itself then when warm with no room to expand she will ooze out. Due to the "Marvel of Volvo" not having a fluid reservoir ( or a expansion tank ) it can push through the lightest pressure seal it can find. Your dealer may want to pressure check it. If she's full off water have them repeatedly flush it. Its death to Cone clutches and internals.

Re: Drive service question
I didn't see oil in the water, but I wasn't necessarily looking. The scum line seems to build up back there in the wintertime. In the summer it is quick work to wipe down while swimming. Easier said than done even on the lift in the winter.
Still waiting to hear from service. I am trying to be patient.
While I am very happy with Volvo and would not change, I must say I did appreciate the drive oil reservoir in my last boat (Merc 7.4). It was so much easier to monitor the level and health of the drive oil.

Gear lube checked out fine in both drives. Service thinks it is just something I came in contact with in the water. Weird.

Re: Drive service question
Yea it was nice with a merc. But hey we don't have to deal with another fitting going through the drive. Well wipe it down and go for another spin.

That’s good news! Yes weird but they put there stamp of approval so it’s hoid to go. You’ll know if you dunk it and a oil sheen shows up..Joe wrote: Tue Feb 26, 2019 11:16 am Gear lube checked out fine in both drives. Service thinks it is just something I came in contact with in the water. Weird.
Yeah lifts and transom cleaning is hard. I use and aluminum scaffold between the fiberglass hoist lifts to give it good wipe downs.
The plus over my Mercs is that silver Volvo’s seems to stay clean! Gotta love that!
