South Dakota trip

Post by Ytmsn »

I'm about to head out on a little trip and thought I'd take ya'll with me.

I work a gig every Thursday in Springfield Missouri so my wife is going with me this week, then after my gig we're driving to Custer SD where her family has a hand built log cabin in the Black Hills National forest.

It's very secluded on the end of a dead end road about 200 yards from the border of the Custer Wildlife Preserve where there is a HUGe free roaming buffalo herd. Everytime we go up there I see more wildlife than anyplace I've ever been. The deer are like dogs, just everywhere. Big horn rams, Billy goats, beaver, otters, the biggest freakin buffalo bulls I've ever seen, chipmunks on your lap eating peanut butter, squirrels, eagles, hawks ans owls... just on and on.

Out in front is a trout stream and a big bluff. Climb the mountain and across the valley is Mt Rushmore, where you can see the side of Washington's face.

Our first stop will be in Springfield at the headquarters of Bass Pro. We have a Bass Pro in OKC that's pretty big, but would only be a "wing" in Springfield! They have a section in the store that makes you feel like your walking across the bottom of a river, complete with the bottom of boats on the ceiling and tree roots on the bank. Faux paint and effects everywhere make it seem pretty real! I want to show my wife.

Soo, we'll be in SD Friday through Monday. I'll post some pics!

By the way, does your trip happen to include Sturgis and Harley’s? Just saying

Stopped in Mitchell SD on the way up to get a picture of the Corn Palace. The entire front is colored corn. I haven't seen this place since the 70s as we've always just driven by but this time I stopped to show Mrs YT

Then we saw this badboy truck in a parking lot and visited with the guy that built the truck, a 59 Cadillac trike and a retro child trike. Pretty cool!

Then after 13 hours, forgetting some of the turnoffs and getting slightly confused, we made it. Better pics to come. Jeesh this place is REMOTE!

Love the Dakota's! I head through Mitchell every year for pheasant season. Simple, beautiful country and typically great people.
Enjoy!

Thanks guys! This place is pretty special with a long history of folks coming out to relax and enjoy the solitude. Here's what it looks like in the daylight.

Beautiful place! And that part of SD is amazing. If you get a bug to gamble then you’ll have to hit Deadwood. Really cool little town.
