New 2018 220s walk-thru transom question
New 2018 220s walk-thru transom question
I've been lurking on the forum for a while. I'm taking delivery of a new 2018 220s in a day or two. A question - we're on a lake, docking bow in, perpendicular to the shore, with the stern exposed to mainly just boat wakes - though some from wake boats are large. Does anyone have a problem with water coming in through the low-to-the-water walk-thru? While the boat will rise, colliding wakes would seem like it might be a problem. Is it? Are their any mitigation techniques, other than docking stern-in, which might be a problem due to the slope of the bottom. Any comments are welcome.

Hey DCLFan. Welcome to the Cobalt chat forum. So glad you found us!
Any pics of your dock & boat? I would think some pretty big waves would have to come through to push over those two or three humps. We had 3 to 5 footers on Lake Erie one day while we swam off the back of the boat. Only one made it half way up the center walk through.
Others will chime in.
Again, welcome aboard mate!

One time in reverse water came through in to the boat. Other than that no problem. Tell us more about your 220. What options?

Welcome and congrats. When you get your boat go to the new member section and post pictures of it. If we ever got water on our walk through I think the boat is sinking. Lol
How deep is the water at the drive area if you docked bow out? Is the bottom sand or rocks? I park in 2.5 feet and I don't bottom out. And every time I put it in great I dig a hole from the prop wash. If your worried try docking now out. The boat will rock less that way.

Thanks for the comments so far. Yes, I will supply pics when we get it in our dock. I know pics, and the colors they reveal, are always a point of discussion here. Teaser--- the hull bottom is black. And yes, I'll be taking a look at docking bow out - but there is a 25 year history of docking bow in to overcome. The lake is a reservoir with a three foot difference in level during boating season. The bottom is rockier than you'd like with ~$1000 worth of props. Measurements will be made.

Have a 2016 220s on Norris lake for two years and never had a wave come over from stern walk through. Wouldn't worry about it to much.

Welcome from California. You know it’s natural to just pull in. And we have a couple of restaurants that the docks are by fast water.
In general I noticed the bow will always take rough water better when tied off. The stern gets the slap and push.
We anchor in fast water stern to shore for that reason.
We need pics of your new 220 plus this awful dock with no 5 mph bouy with the 200 foot rule being ignored.

Norris_Boating: thanks for that report.
ajcampen: 6.2L MPI-ECT B3 DTS, docking lights, sea grass, black arch, fender clips, satellite radio, transom speakers, driver's rear-view mirror, etc. The satellite radio is the only thing I probably would not have ordered if I had spec'd it. Oh, and a flagpole.
thunder550: pics over the weekend, plus some details on what is actually in it that I could not find online, like the model of the dual battery ACR, which radio is in the premium package (saw it, but didn't make a note), what the bilge pump is, and the like. I know, I seem to be fixated on the water aspect... I like to keep the smoke in the electronics, and water out of the boat.

Yes, very important to keep the magic smoke inside the wires! Electronics don't work without it.

cmattj: Chortle. Part of any boater safety course (or boat rental signup) should be to go out in the parking lot and pace off 200 feet.

I'm with Matt on this one... What dock isn't a no wake zone? If you don't obey the idle speed zones you will hear about it... I'll have to grab a pic of the big sign the dock out up because apparently the bouys marking it no wake didn't work!
I say you just put up your own no wake sign!
