Future of CS23

Post by mlakeguy »

Hi All, we are downsizing lakes and would like a smaller boat than our R3 surf. We went to take a look at a CS23 Surf. I'm a bit torn on this one because the current CS23 is the older Cobalt hull that I really like but has the mediocre surf gates and let's just say weak surf controls.
Since the CS23 is the only boat still around with the Cobalt surf I'm sure the CS23 will be upgraded to Malibu Surf Gate and controls or discontinued. Has anyone heard anything? My dealer says an R2 Surf is not coming :( We looked at the R4 Surf and is nice but not as nice as our R3 and expensive, however it surfs way better. But it is significantly bigger and heavier than our R3.

Curious if anyone has heard anything. We really like the R3 but sits really high in the water and is not very sporty to drive so would really like to get back into a lower freeboard more nimble boat. Too bad they don't make a surf version of our old 08, 220 as that was the best boat we ever owned!

Thanks

This is in the "for what it's worth" column from me. We ordered a '21 CS22 because we needed a trailerable boat at the time and it checked all the boxes. We think the 22/23 hull, and specifically stern are some of the coolest on the water in that size range. When we ordered the dealer told us there were no indications from Cobalt of sunsetting that hull, though if it were me I would have to consider dropping the CS22 and keeping the CS23. I can't speak to the surf component, not an interest of ours, but can say the CS does all the tubing and skiing we need and is a LOT of fun to drive. We have the DP and the boat handles like it's on rails and gives us a dry stable ride on a large lake. We're cruising and cove anchoring folks and this is the right boat for us. From what I see on the lakes there are a ton of "purpose built" wake boats out there in this size range that would probably be a better tool for that. They all look like coolers with seats in them to me, but different strokes as they say.

I've never owned a CS series cobalt but I must say they are great looking boats. They look like they'd be fun to drive. We are really into surfing. I would tell you that it is my understanding that the Malibu gate system that was put on the R,4,6,8 surf boats was built specific to the hull. I don't think you'll see a CS series boat that has the Malibu system on it and if you do likely the hull will be totally redesigned and you may lose a lot of what you like about the boat.

I'm not sure that the CS23 is really downsizing from the R3. Just not at deep and a different layout.

I know this is the Cobalt forum, but have you considered just getting a Malibu?
