I’ve seen a few other posts about this on the forum. Why aren’t dealers educating new owners on this issue? Watch your wake folks.

Re: Another victim of hydrolocking
This is me. Came over here and joined up. Happy to provide some more info if folks would like. The mechanics are supposed to be on the boat tomorrow morning. I plan on joining them if I can rearrange some work calls. I’d love to be there when the fire it up. If they get that far….

Re: Another victim of hydrolocking
Sorry about finding out what reversion is.
Sucks big time. Yes others where drained pickled change oil and plugs and put back on the water. Haven't heard of any after effects from them. To me I wouldn't want that engine. It just took a crap load of stress to it.
So what year is your boat? Size, model? And I'm guessing a 430 volvo? Pictures

Re: Another victim of hydrolocking
So I need to be educated here. First I’ll say I am not mechanically inclined. I can check the oil and other fluids and I know where the gas goes. After reading these posts I’ve seen that having the wake come upon the boat can cause this, or cutting the throttle too quickly can cause it.
I have an R8 Surf, when surfing with ballast there is a huge wave behind the boat… even if you stop slowly the wave comes up over the transom walk through. Am I missing something? I would think that they would have a ton of there surf boats having this issue. Is the reverse drive not as susceptible to this? I even with my R7 surf we had a big wave being produced and the wave coming up over the swim platform getting a ton of water in the bilge, but everything ran fine.
I thought somewhere I read the reverse drive has the exhaust run under the water which after reading those posts would make me think they would be more susceptible to hydro-lock.
Can someone explain this in more lay person / non mechanical terms so I can understand how to prevent it?
Thanks!

Honestly the best thing you can do to prevent this is to slow down slowly.
Or buy a mercury. They have flappers in the exhaust to help prevent this.
Is just has to be the right conditions for this to happen.

I had three Mercs before this. Never a problem. Dealer pimps Volvo hard. I should have insisted on a Merc like my instincts told me too..Big Block Power wrote: Tue Jun 14, 2022 8:16 pm Honestly the best thing you can do to prevent this is to slow down slowly.

I don’t know about the reverse drives, but the dealer mentioned the issues they have seen are on A29’s and R8’s FWIW.dsthomas wrote: Tue Jun 14, 2022 6:55 pm So I need to be educated here. Re: Another victim of hydrolocking
I see your question kinda got skipped over. From what I have read about surf boats most are making a turn away from the wave at the end of the run to avoid this.dsthomas wrote: Tue Jun 14, 2022 6:55 pm So I need to be educated here. Thanks! From some of the accounts I've read it seems like this is a unique thing that happens in just the right circumstances even when doing the appropriate things to avoid it.dustinm wrote: Wed Jun 15, 2022 8:09 am I see your question kinda got skipped over. I would think the people at Volvo penta would issue some sort of recall to address this. I can't imagine buying a car for $200K and having the salesmen say, "oh by the way try not to slow down to fast because that could cause thousands of dollars of damage to the engine." I guess they have calculated it's cheaper to deal with it when it happens vs issue a recall to fix it? It sounds like Merc has a solution for it.

The worst part is they’re not even giving owners that courtesy. I can understand not wanting to scare off potential buyers, but at the very least they should be warning new owners when they take delivery.dsthomas wrote: Wed Jun 15, 2022 12:12 pmI can't imagine buying a car for $200K and haveing the salesmen say, "oh by the way try not to slow down to fast becasue that could cause thousands of dollars of damage to othe engine." In the end we’re in a world run by accountants and lawyers. So I wouldn’t expect any support from cobalt until the ROI favors correcting the problem instead of bandaid solutions. Or until they piss off the wrong person with deep enough pockets to lawyer up.

Re: Another victim of hydrolocking
My boat is 20 years old and no issues. It's a gambling game.
Mine is no different then the new ones. Same tech used back then.
Is all about how much of a rise in the risers.
They should raise it some. The issues with a surf boat is weighted down so they are even lower in the water that can cause a larger issue.
