OK...So I have come to the conclusion that changing out my shift cable might be the best thing to do FIRST. I have looked on iBoat and Great Lakes Skipper...nothing specific for a Cobalt 272. I guess I am going to have to bring the boat to the house from storage and locate a part number on the cable ...

Are cables difficult to replace????? I have never had to do it! My old boat out in the driveway is a 1978 and it has a V/P 280...original cables on it as far as I know~~~ I bought it back in 03 never had a hiccup~~~

I am going to read as much as I can and then do some troubleshooting! Social Security only income...not a lot of room for Shop time by the hour~~~

My controls at the helm operate smoothly with the engine off. Wit it running, I have difficulty getting it out of gear from both Forward and Reverse. Because it is only when running, I am guessing it it NOT the cable itself... What do you guys think???

Yes, there are water injection ports on each tube. I can only imagine how loud a 572 Cu.In. would be without water injection~~~~ My old jet boat had a 396 with Over the Transom headers and it was loud!!!

I got my boat fixed!!! Yay!!! It was in fact, the "Shear Coupling". It cost me $425.00 to get it replaced. 2.5 hrs labor and it is done!!! Not too bad~~~ I really thought I was gonna get hosed!!!
The guy that I dealt with was OUTSTANDING!!! He also saved me from buying a steeper pitched prop-set ...

Wow!!! I sounds like you got lucky! I pulled off the cast cover where the shifting mechanism and the shift cable connect~~~ All looks good there! I will know a week from today if I will need to buy a case of KY~~~

I called...the guy I talked to said there is a shear coupling between the upper and lower unit...IF that is the problem ...approx. $600 to fix ...ONE MONTH WAIT!!! That killed me~~~ He turned me on to his competition...That guy made me an appointment for next Wednesday!!!
